Acetaia La Bonissima
The name “La Bonissima” represents, for the people of Modena, the highest expression of Modenese identity in the truest sense of the word. “La Bonissima” is a small statue located on the corner of the Town Hall building in Modena, facing the square where the ancient Romanesque Cathedral also stands.
This statue, affectionately called La Bonissima by the locals, is believed to depict a noblewoman who, according to some, held a balance scale, symbolizing fairness in weight, measurement, and the quality of goods. Others say that during a severe famine that struck Modena, a noble lady ensured the survival of the city’s poor by generously distributing grain and food.
The statue was erected in the 13th century as an eternal reminder of that noble gesture. Since then, it has become one of the city’s most cherished symbols.
